Job Overview
This is a client-side New Build Project Manager position responsible for overseeing the successful delivery of large-scale yacht construction projects from build phase through to handover.
Acting as the owner’s representative on-site, the role combines technical oversight, coordination across multidisciplinary teams, and high-level stakeholder engagement. You will typically manage multiple projects concurrently, supported by project engineering resource, while ensuring alignment between shipyard execution and owner expectations.
This position is ideally suited to a former yacht captain transitioning ashore, bringing operational insight into a structured project delivery environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the owner’s interests throughout the build process, ensuring delivery aligns with agreed specifications and expectations.
- Oversee day-to-day progress at the shipyard, maintaining visibility across all construction phases.
- Coordinate closely with naval architects, designers, engineers, and shipyard teams to ensure seamless integration of all technical disciplines.
- Review technical documentation, drawings, and change requests to ensure accuracy and feasibility.
- Monitor project timelines and key milestones, escalating risks or delays where required.
- Lead regular progress meetings and provide clear, structured reporting to senior stakeholders.
- Support commissioning, testing, and sea trials, ensuring systems perform in line with design intent.
- Manage defect identification and resolution through to final delivery.
- Collaborate with internal senior management on broader commercial and contractual considerations.
- Ensure compliance with class, flag, and regulatory requirements throughout the build lifecycle.
Candidate Profile
- Master 3000 qualification (or equivalent senior command experience).
- Previous experience as a yacht captain on large yachts (40m+).
- Strong understanding of yacht systems, construction processes, and shipyard environments.
- Proven exposure to new build and/or major refit projects.
- Excellent organisational and coordination skills across multiple workstreams.
- Confident communicator, capable of representing owners in a professional environment.
- Willingness to travel regularly to European shipyards (primarily Italy).
- Right to work within Europe.
Nice to have:
- Previous shore-based project management experience.
- Formal project management certification (e.g. PRINCE2, PMP).
- Technical background in marine engineering or naval architecture.
- Experience working directly with European shipyards on new builds.
