The Client

Proteus is working with a highly respected yacht management company operating at the premium end of the European superyacht market. Supporting complex new build projects across leading shipyards, our client is known for its technical credibility, structured delivery approach, and exceptional team retention. Their project teams work closely with owners and shipyards to ensure yachts are delivered to the highest standards, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and long-term career development.

Job Overview

The Project Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the successful delivery of superyacht new build projects, working closely alongside the Project Manager to ensure technical execution is aligned with design intent and build quality expectations.

This is a hands-on, shipyard-based position focused on technical oversight, coordination, and quality assurance across multiple disciplines. You will be embedded within the build environment, acting as a key link between engineering detail, shipyard execution, and project-level reporting.

The role is particularly well suited to a former yacht engineer looking to transition ashore into a structured, long-term project environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Project Manager in the day-to-day technical oversight of new build yacht projects.
  • Maintain a consistent on-site presence at the shipyard, monitoring construction progress and technical execution.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, and system integrations with a focus on mechanical and onboard systems.
  • Coordinate with shipyard teams, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure work is delivered in line with agreed standards.
  • Track and follow up on technical actions, open items, and contractor deliverables.
  • Conduct inspections and support quality control processes throughout the build lifecycle.
  • Assist with defect identification, snagging, and resolution management.
  • Contribute to commissioning, testing, and sea trials, ensuring systems perform as intended.
  • Provide structured feedback and reporting to the Project Manager on progress, risks, and technical challenges.
  • Support coordination across multiple projects, balancing workload based on project complexity and phase.
Candidate Profile
  • Y2 (or equivalent) engineering qualification.
  • Previous experience as a yacht engineer (2nd Engineer or above) on 50m+ vessels.
  • Strong technical understanding of yacht systems, particularly mechanical and onboard engineering systems.
  • Experience working in shipyard environments (new build or refit exposure).
  • High level of organisation and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical workstreams simultaneously.
  • EU residency and right to work within Europe.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to shipyards (primarily Italy).

Nice to have:

  • Prior shore-based experience within yacht projects or refit environments.
  • Exposure to large-scale new build projects.
  • Experience working closely with project managers or owner’s teams.
  • Familiarity with class and regulatory requirements.
Salary and benefits
  • Competitive monthly rate (€6,000–€8,000 depending on experience).
  • Long-term project pipeline offering continuity and stability.
  • Accommodation provided near the shipyard during project phases.
  • Travel expenses covered (including flights or vehicle support).
  • Clear pathway for progression into Project Management roles.
  • Collaborative team environment with experienced leadership and mentorship.
